Abstract

Faroese language planning innuences the selection of words - both the entry words (lemma) and the equivalents in Faroese dictionaries. The puristic trend in language policy has put the editors in a dilemma concerning words of foreign origin and especially words containing affixes of non-Norse origin. This attitude has changed in recent years and this has resulted in a wide vocabulary range in the Faroese dictionaries. It has become evident that there is a tendency to allow a larger number of words conlaining affixes of non-Norse origin in Faroese dictionaries. The article addresses an analysis of the selection of vocabulary in one monolingual dictionary, two bilingual dictionaries and one multilingual dictionary.
