Abstract
The táttur, or satirical ballad Stelkatáttur (Corpus Carminum Færoensium 205) is localized in the village of Dalur on Sandoy and a dating o{ circa 1600 is suggested (hitherto the earliest dating of a táttur was circa 1700). The masculine proper name Brestingur, which appears in the táttur considered in this paper and also in an entry for the year 1617 of the proceedings of the løgting, probably referring to the same man, is idcntified as either originally a patronymic derived from Brestir or, following Lind, as (originally) a nickname formed from (subst.) brestur, or (vb.) bresta.
