Abstract
On the basis of the local pronunciation [hos-] and Norwegian parallels (Høsbjør, Haskoll, Haaskoll) the name of a piece of pebble beach of Nólsoy is proposed to have been originally ''Hosmql, 'the gray pebble beach'. Therefore the modern spelling of the name should be Høsmøl instead of Hósmøl, which has hitherto been the accepted way of spelling the name, based on the opinion that the name were originally *Pórsmol. If the latter was the fact, the present local pronunciation ought to be
[hos-].
