Abstract

In the period 1988-91, a large scale investigation of the benthic invertebrate fauna was undertaken in Faroese waters. The main goal of this investigation was to gain knowledge of and to compile a complete taxonomicfaunistic overview of the marine benthic fauna in Faroese waters. In the initial BIOFAR programme (BIOFAR 1), samples were obtained from approximately
600 sites located primarily at depths between 100-1000 m, with some as deep as 2420 m. A subsequent investigation focused on the shoreline and shallow waters. In the years 1995-1999, samples were taken from 872 stations covering the upper shoreline down to 100 m. This programme, run under the name BIOFAR 2, was lead by a steering committee consistingof
Torleiv Brattegard, University of Bergen; Jon-Arne Sneli, University of Trondheim; Ruth Nielsen, University of Copenhagen; Karl Gunnarson, Marine Research Institute, Iceland; Ole S. Tendal, University of Copenhagen; Arne Nørrevang, University of the Faroe Islands; and Jan Sørensen, Kaldbak Marine Biological Laboratory, Faroe Islands. The information obtained from all BIOFAR 1 stations was printed in the marine biological journal, SARSIA (Nørrevang et ai, 1994). This paper completes the list
and provides detailed information on all BIOFAR 2 stations. More information on the BIOFAR programme may be obtained from the above-mentioned issue of SARSIA.
