Abstract

In 1843 V. U. Hammershaimb, (the) father of the Faroese written language, met with both Svend Grundtvig of Denmark and Gunnar Olof Hylten-Cavallius of Sweden. Hammershaimb, Grundtvig and Hylten-Cavallius all became important collectors of etnographic material in their respective home countrie. Svend Grundtvig and V. U. Hammershaimb remained friends all their lives, but we do not know any more about the relations between Hylten-Cavallius and Hammershaimb other than this occasion in July 1843, when Hammershaimb told him about superstition in the Faroe Islands. At that time Hylten-Cavallius took a
great interest in »Die niedere Mythologie«. The following copies of his notes are interesting in themselves.
