Abstract

Late in the evening of the 30th January 1673 most of the trading booths and warehouses on Tinganes in Tórshavn were burned to the ground. How they were rebuilt can be seen from a map from 1710 (ill. 1.), but there have been various views as to how the buildings were situated before the fire. An analysis of the source material about the fire and earlier information about the
buildings on Tinganes give an indication of how the buildings stood in relation to each other and to those which were saved. Some of these other buildings are still standing, and most of the others have been identified from later sources. How the destroyed buildings appear to have been situated in relation to those which were saved and to each other is indicated in ill. 4, and the conclusion to be drawn from the examination is that the buildings on Tinganes were rebuiit more or less on the same sites and constructed in approximately the same manner as before the fire.
