Abstract
The paper deals with the results of an archaeological research made on the site of the church in Porkeri, Suðuroy, built in 1847.
Remains of two older churches daiting back to the 17th and 18th century were found under the present church floor. Though the architectural history of the preceeding churches, mentioned in the written sourtes, is examined, it is not possible to give an exact dating of the churches, because written sources from the 18th century are scarce and therefore they can not be linked with the archaeological evidence. It is worth noting that because of the limitation of the research the excavation did not go as far down as to unearth older remains which were observed. Also it should be mentioned that burnt, heat-cracked stones are found in the western part of the cemetary whenever a new grave is dug and on the beach .south of the church, indicating ancient rettlement.
