Abstract

A prospective, comparative study in 73 patients was carried out to determine the value of trocar suprapubic cystostomy as a means of postoperative bladder drainage versus bladder drainage by transurethral catheter. The investigation was performed with 32 patients in the group with suprapubic cystostomy and 41 patients in the group with transurethral catheter.

The study showed a less incidence of urinary infection in the group with suprapubic cystostomy, finding urinary infection in 9 patients in this group (33°/o per cent) and 16 in the group with transurethral catheter (46 per cent).

On he other hand it is clearly showed that the mean days of urinary drainage and the mean days of postoperative hospitalization are equal in the two groups, so the adveantages of using suprapubic cystostomy are few.
