Abstract

The article attempts (1) to calculate the size of the Faroese population about tlhe year 1600 on the basis of the rent-roll of 1584, (2) to determine the division of landed property among the landowners (tenants of the Danish Crown and freeholders)
at the same time and according to the source mentioned. As to the main part of the work we arrive at a population of some 3180 about 1600. The method employed in reaching this number has been to copy a total number all names on the rent-roll
(collumn A); this gives a total number of 532 names (p. 9). However, a closer examination of these names discloses the fact
that a great number of them are mentioned twice or even several times, hence a reduction in the total number of entries
is necessary. This has been made in column B, and the actual number of maintainers tums out to be 436 (p. 33). The latter
may be supposed to represent a family of 5 persons each. Result: 2180 persons. But, in addition, a probable number of farm workers, male and female, and pensioners must be taken into account — a number wlhich has been estimated at about 1000. Accordingly the total Faroese population about 1600 will be as mentioned above.
